By luck of the draw, Amber, Logan, and Nick were the last three performers scheduled for the night, in that order, which didn't hurt Logan's feelings at all. Artistically speaking, he wasn't that impressed with the other contestants—except for Nick and Amber, of course—and he hadn't bothered to acquaint himself with them on a personal level. His future stood on shaky ground regardless of the outcome of the competition, and he saw no sense in making more friends he might never see again.
Victor Reeves entered the boys' dressing room and retreated to a dark corner to sulk. Cameron burst through the door moments later, spouting his own accolades in a loud, excited voice. Logan turned his back on him, tuning him out, and concentrated on mentally running over tonight's performance.
After a while, Nick fussing at the makeup artist abruptly drew Logan out of his own head. He spun his salon chair around to face the other side of the room. "Hey!" Logan laughed at the woman attacking Nick with a black eyeliner pencil. "Leave him the hell alone—he's too pretty already, and it's not fair to the rest of us ordinary-looking folk."
"Listen to my boyfriend," Nick said, reaching for a tissue to dab at an errant black streak underneath one eye. "Great. I look like somebody slugged me."
Combined with his relief at having survived the cut, the song Logan had been rehearsing put him in a mood: mischievous, substantially more flamboyant than normal, and shamelessly bold. He gave Nick a quick wink. "You look gorgeous, Nick, so sexy and hot." Logan pursed his lips at the camera-wielding pain-in-the-ass hovering over him. "Doesn't he, Kyle?"
Kyle peeked out from behind the viewfinder. "How would I know? I'm totally straight."
"Sure you are." Logan swiped his tongue across his upper lip. "But so is spaghetti until you heat it up."
"I'd do him," Cameron quipped as he dropped into the chair at his makeup station. "I should have scooped when I had the chance, so I could've been featured in Rock Universe. What do you think, Nick? Can you handle a second man in your life?"
Nick snorted and faced the mirror, lips tight, but he didn't respond.
What a bitch. Logan glared at Cameron. "I don't believe anybody was talkin' to you, pecker-head."
Much to the makeup artist's frustration, Nick snapped his head around. "Logan . . . ."
"It's a free country." Cameron leaned over the side of his chair and plucked a bottle of water from a beverage cooler. "Be careful, Logan. Your uneducated drawl is showing."
Incensed, Logan sprang out of his chair in one fluid motion, a miraculous accomplishment given how tight his damn jeans were and the heavy weight of the boots on his feet. God, he missed sneakers and comfortable, baggy pants. He stood in front of Cameron, just outside the jerk's personal zone, chest out, ready to rumble. "Look, you little prick. Stay away from my man unless you fancy the idea of singin' soprano for the rest of your life.
